ADDRESS
"Harpists as God's Work of Art"
Rev. Dr. C. Lynn Bailey, Chaplain
Ephesians 2:10 "We are God's work of art, created in Christ Jesus for the good works which God has already designated to make up our way of life." Like a renaissance master, God takes the 12 notes of music, our hands and hearts, and makes us an art work of beauty. With the harp we enhance the beauty of creation.
"Workshop - Gregorian Chant for the Harp"
Rhett Barnwell
With the recent surge of interest in Gregorian chant, many people are rediscovering this most ancient form of sung prayer. We will look at the origins of Gregorian chant and see its fundamental role in the shaping of Western sacred music. These simple and beautifully profound melodies lend themselves well to being played on the harp, and this workshop will explore how to do this as well as examining existing arrangements. Victoria Lawson will join Rhett in bringing these ancient melodies to life.
"Workshop - The Joy of Bach"
Rhett Barnwell
Just added to the line-up, Rhett will bring an informative and sometimes humorous approach to the harp music of Johann Sebastian Bach, or rather, the lack thereof. Find out why this periwigged master of polyphony seems to have written nothing for the harp, and what has been done to correct this grievous omission. We will explore the spirituality of Bach, often called the "Fifth Evangelist" and look at clever transcriptions of some of his greatest pieces which can now be readily enjoyed on lever and pedal harp.
"Workshop - The Joy and Art of Simplicity"
Angi Bemiss
When you've been asked to play for church, were you able to say, "Yes, I'd love to!"? If there's a song you'd really like to play, can you arrange it for harp? What about accompanying a soloist? It's true that complicated harp solos have their role. Frequently, though, a simple (but beautiful) arrangement is good . . . even preferable. We'll look at several songs to see how to keep things simple & to experience joy when playing your harp at church.
"Workshop - Spiritual Music"
Robbin Gordon-Cartier
Spiritual Music - what fits where, how to know what denominations use what music and the different ways they are played. Be able to go from a synagogue to a Pentecostal church with ease and assurance. Let's explore arrangements, rules and repertoire.
"Workshop - Harp 'Yoga' "
Christine Van Arsdale
This is "yoga" for the fingers! Not a traditional yoga session, here’s a workshop to gently awaken and condition your arms and fingers. It’s time to enjoy this process of fine-tuning your muscles so that they can respond to what your brain tells them. . . building a foundation that allows you to more fully express your music. Christine brings a unique approach that makes technical practice fun!
Special Event
"Pilgrimage to Compostela"
A multimedia presentation on "life as a pilgrimage". What is it like to be a pilgrim and what is our responsibility to fellow pilgrims? This special presentation will include pictures of the Camino, a pilgrimage trail in northern Spain which has been walked by many saints, including St. Francis, and accompanied with early Spanish harp music.
Presented by Lynn and Martha Bailey, and Christine Van Arsdale who have all made this pilgrimage.
